What Is in a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are a popular skin care solution that can reveal smoother, healthier facial skin without the need for much downtime (if any at all). At Dermlounge Caitlin M. Roop, our licensed master aesthetician, performs this non-invasive treatment, tailoring it to the patient’s skin condition and the concerns they would like to improve. The recommended chemical formula will depend upon the level of intensity the patient needs to reach their goals, as well as the amount of downtime they are comfortable with. The most common chemicals typically used in chemical peels include:

  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
  • Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)
  • Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
  • Phenol

AHAs and BHAs are the least intense acids and are often used as part of the gentler micropeel treatment. TCA can be used in various formulas, typically as part of a medium-grade chemical peel. Finally, phenol is the most powerful chemical used in peels, such as in our Vi Peels, causing about 2-5 days of moderate peeling in most cases.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC Introduced as Dermal Filler for Nasolabial Folds

JUVÉDERM® continues to revolutionize the market for cosmetic injectables with the introduction of JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC, a new product specifically designed to target the smile lines that extend from the nose to the mouth. JUVÉDERM® has long released a number of innovative dermal fillers that use naturally occurring substances to combat the forces of time and age, but JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC acts as the only product that can achieve optimal results for nasolabial folds lasting up to a year and a half.

Like all products in the JUVÉDERM® dermal filler line, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC is composed of a hyaluronic acid-based gel. Hyaluronic acid is a substance produced naturally in the body to moisturize and soften skin. Combined with lidocaine, a mild anesthetic found in the gel to decrease discomfort at the injection site, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC firms and softens skin, yet remains supple enough to flow easily through the desired treatment area.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC gently and effectively improves the look of nasolabial folds, or “parentheses” wrinkles, by adding small amounts of volume to the treatment area for a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC’s ability to comprehensively treat moderate to severe wrinkles in the lower half of the face with a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure is prompting some patients to consider it as an alternative to a facelift. Benefits of using JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC can include:

  • Temporarily reverses signs of aging by smoothing nasolabial folds
  • Minimizes discomfort during the procedure due to the built-in anesthetic
  • Lasts up to eighteen months

Mild to moderate side effects may appear at the injection site and can include swelling, numbness, bruising, or discoloration. Within a week, these will typically subside.

To learn more about whether you are a good candidate for JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC, please contact our practice today.

Why Choose Medical-Grade Skincare?

Everyone wants to have glowing, healthy skin, but not everyone is using the right products to achieve this flawless complexion. While some individuals have their favorite drugstore products, others are loyal users of pharmaceutical-grade skincare products. At the Dermlounge, we offer the highly regarded SkinMedica®, Obagi® and SkinCeuticals® Medical skincare lines and treatments. To learn why our medical-grade skincare products have better potential than over-the-counter cosmetic products, read about each type of beauty product below.

Over-the-Counter Beauty Products

The most commonly purchased beauty products are those sold at drugstores and other retailers without the need for a prescription. The active ingredients in these products are designed to treat the average person and are legally not allowed to surpass a certain level. As a result, many people don’t achieve the dramatic results they expect.

Due to the marketing of these products promising beautiful outcomes, people continue to buy the different products hoping to find one that can provide the improvement they desire. While many of these products can help the skin, people often need to use more of these to get near the same level of effects achieved by medical-grade products.

Medical-Grade Skincare Products

Although over-the-county beauty products and medical-grade skincare are often intended for treating the same concerns, medical-grade products are prescribed by doctors or licensed aestheticians. The formulas in medical-grade skincare are designed to reach deeper into the skin for a more dramatic improvement. This is possible due to the higher concentration and number of active ingredients involved.

A major difference between products offered by licensed professionals versus drugstores is that medical-grade skincare is under FDA regulation to contain 99.9% pure ingredients and to ensure safety and effectiveness. They are supported by scientific research and are specifically formulated for best results. Because of this fact, those interested in transforming their complexion should seek medical-grade skincare products to achieve optimal results.

Finding the Best Products for Your Needs

While many people find that over-the-counter beauty products can provide sufficient results, medical-grade skincare is more reliable and clinically proven to achieve faster, more effective improvement. By combining pharmaceutical-grade skincare with the expertise of our licensed professionals, you can achieve the beautiful, younger-looking skin you desire.

How Long Is Recovery After Laser Skin Resurfacing?

woman-smooth-skinLaser skin resurfacing is a non-surgical method of facial rejuvenation that can address a wide range of common skin concerns. Our fractional CO2 laser treatments can effectively treat larger areas such as the abdomen and hips, but is also delicate enough to treat areas such as the areas around the eyes and mouth. The benefits of laser skin resurfacing can include:

  •      Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  •      Lightening dark spots and age spots
  •      Reversing the visible effects of sun damage
  •      Achieving a more even skin tone
  •      Smoothing and softening scars and stretch marks

By simultaneously shedding dead or damaged skin cells and stimulating new collagen production, fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatments can reveal a smoother, more youthful complexion. As an added benefit, unlike older methods of CO2 treatments, our fractional CO2 laser can minimize downtime and reduce the risks of scarring or pigmentation.

Mild redness and irritation are the most common side effects of fractional CO2 laser treatments, and these inconveniences typically resolve within one to two weeks. Antibiotic and antiviral medications are prescribed for all patients a few days before treatment to prevent infection. To maximize the results of your laser skin resurfacing treatment, we recommend you wear sunscreen daily for at least six months after the procedure. In addition, some of our patients at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery’s med spa choose to undergo multiple treatment sessions for a more complete skin rejuvenation.

From injectables to skin care treatments, the team at Dermlounge is proud to help patients rejuvenate their appearance through a variety of non-surgical options. In the medical spa’s recent blog series, their services are highlighted for the different ways they can reduce signs of facial aging.

In “The 2 Major Types of Injectables to Treat Wrinkles,” patients can learn the difference between botulinum toxin type A injectables, like BOTOX® Cosmetic, and dermal fillers, like JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®. Patients interested in the anti-aging effects of injectables are educated on the different types during their consultation with Dr. Neil Zemmel, who performs the injections at Dermlounge. Depending on the area of concern and the extent of their needs, your doctor may recommend a specific injectable or combination of different injectables to help them achieve their aesthetic goals.

For the medical spa’s second blog post, “Skin Care Treatments for a Youthful Complexion,” the topic of improving the skin’s appearance and health is discussed. Treatments like the photofacial and microdermabrasion are both presented as effective solutions to various signs of aging, like age spots or wrinkles. Additionally, Dermlounge’s licensed esthetician can help patients find a medical grade skin care line, should they be interested in adopting an advanced skin care regimen to improve their complexion.

The team at Dermlounge recommends anyone interested in anti-aging procedures to do their research and find a qualified professional with which to consult. By doing so, they can learn what options are most appropriate for their individual needs.

How to Clear Up Brown Spots, Acne Scars and Age Spots

DermloungeBrown spots, acne scars, and age spots…OH MY! When it comes to our face, these three words immediately convey insecurity and low self-esteem. No one wants to look in the mirror and see any type of spot tarnishing their beautiful face. So what do you do? How do you clear up these spots to ensure people won’t be staring at your Dalmatian spotted skin?

The Dermlounge offers numerous options to choose from when deciding to get rid of these problem areas. Lasers, peels, and skincare products can all be utilized to remove areas of skin discoloration. One of the best non-invasive options with absolutely no down time is a topical skin lightening product. Both Obagi and SkinCeuticals offer skin lightening products that contain different ingredients but are both extremely effective and can easily be added in to your night time skin regimen.Untitled

SkinCeutical’s Advanced Pigment Regulator was awarded the Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award in 2013 by Allure Magazine due to its success in treating hyperpigmentation. Pigment Regulator contains salicylic acid, hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid, vitamin E, and yeast extract to help generate glowing, flawless skin. These ingredients diminish existing spots by exfoliating, preventing melanin transfer, stopping excess melanin production, and improving skin’s resistance to new and reoccurring pigmentation.

Untitled2Obagi’s product for reducing unwanted pigmentation, Clear, has been called the “Gold Standard Skin Lightener.” The product is safe for use on all skin types and contains four percent hydroquinone which corrects the appearance of age and sun spots by gradually lightening dark spots. Due to the high percentage of hydroquinone, a prescription from Dr. Zemmel is required to purchase this product.

No matter which product you choose you will be sure to help erase your unwanted brown spots. Both products are available at The Dermlounge. Stop by the office to pick them up or call Dermlounge at 804-423-2100 to schedule a free skin analysis with our esthetician.

A Few of Our Favorite Things – Skin Care Staff Favorites

shutterstock_110499950It is always fun to experiment with new skin care products. However, we understand that it can be overwhelming walking into our office and encountering the multitude of different products. Where do you start? What products will work best with your particular skin type?

Don’t fret! Brenda, our master esthetician, is always available for consultations to evaluate your skin and tell you which products will work best for you. In the meantime our staff has compiled a list of their FAVORITE tried and true products.

Obagi Vitamin C (15% or 20%): We do not know what we would do without our Vitamin C! Almost everyone in our office uses this product. The serum visibly brightens skin and helps to retain moisture which is important in these dry winter months. We love how smooth and refreshed our skin feels and looks after using this product.

SkinCeuticals Redness Neutralizer: Donna loves this miraculous product. After battling blotchy red skin for years she feels as if she can actually leave the house without covering her skin with makeup due to this product. This product combats redness and flushing of skin.

Obagi Elastiderm Eye Roller: Emily is a huge fan of this product and recommends it to all of her patients. Not only does this product help replenish elasticity it truly helps to reduce the morning puffiness underneath your eyes due to the caffeine in the product. Emily even keeps her eye roller in the refrigerator and applies it cold to help wake up those tired eyes.

Obagi Sunshield SPF 50 Sunscreen: We cannot stress the importance of sunscreen enough to you! It is extremely important to wear sunscreen every day in order to protect and preserve youthful appearing skin. Becky and Donna both love this sunscreen because it goes on super lightweight and does not feel heavy at all.

Latisse: We could not mention our favorite products without mentioning Latisse. So it may not be a skin care product but who doesn’t want longer lashes? Sreyon and Kerri absolutely swear by Latisse. They stated that their lashes have practically doubled in length using this product!

Spa Facials VS. Medical Facials: What’s the difference?

Facials are offered anywhere from salons and spas to plastic surgeons’ offices.
So, what are the differences between them?

If you choose to have a facial done at a spa, expect more of a relaxing and pampering experience. Skin issues can be addressed, but the ingredients are geared towards comfort and soothing. While they can be effective, they may not be as strong or medically-based as what you can get at a doctor’s office.

Medical facials are not as relaxing or pampering; more attention is given to serious skin concerns and need a clinical approach to achieve the results they want. Stronger concentrations and prescription-strength ingredients are used, along with light and laser treatments, more aggressive peels and microdermabrasion can be used to tackle more serious skin concerns. Treating yourself to regular facials is essential to maintain a regular pattern of exfoliation and healthy skin. When the skin is properly and frequently exfoliated, the cell turnover rate ensues, which means softer skin that is more even in tone, less prone to breakouts and shows fewer signs of aging.

Richmond Aesthetic Surgery’s medical spa, The Dermlounge, offers a relaxing and pampering experience with true results to target those serious skin concerns. The best of both! Contact us for a consultation with our Master Aesthetician.
