Why Do I Have a Double Chin When I’m Not Overweight?

Having submental fullness, commonly referred to as a double chin, is typically associated with being overweight, but even those who are slim or “skinny” can have this cosmetic concern. There are a variety of factors that can lead to the appearance of a double chin—some of which are in our control, others that are not. The type and cause of your submental fullness will ultimately determine the best double chin treatment for your needs.

Maintaining a healthy weight through exercise and diet can help you avoid developing a double chin, but this is only one contributing factor. Many people may not realize it, but poor posture can also lead to a double chin. From looking down at your phone to sitting slumped over, spending much of your time with your head bent in this position can cause muscles in the chin and neck to weaken. Over time, this can also cause the skin to become more lax.

While people typically have some control over their weight and posture, other factors that are out of a person’s control can contribute to a double chin. This includes a person’s genetics, because having a family history of poor skin elasticity or extra fat storage under the chin can often be inherited. In addition, the aging process makes it more likely that a double chin will form. Skin can start to sag, and fat can buildup or shift to create a fuller under-chin area.

As explained above, a double chin can be caused by either lax skin or excess fat cells, each requiring a different method of treatment. Loose skin, for instance, may be able to be slightly tightened with certain non-surgical treatments, or neck lift surgery may be needed for more dramatic improvement. For those with unwanted fat deposits under their chin, however, non-surgical treatments include CoolSculpting® and KYBELLA®, or liposuction surgery for those with more significant fat reduction needs.

How Can Hyaluronic Acid Make Me Look Younger?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that naturally occurs in the body to help tissues retain moisture. The skin contains a significant amount of the body’s hyaluronic acid, which binds to water and keeps skin hydrated. Although this substance is produced naturally by the body, the natural aging process and other factors—like sun damage, smoking, and pollution—can cause it to gradually be depleted. As this occurs, lines and wrinkles can become more pronounced due to the skin losing its youthful plumpness.

To help combat the gradual decrease of hyaluronic acid in our skin as we age, the substance can be taken as an oral supplement, applied topically, or injected into the skin. This ingredient has become an incredibly popular way to revitalize the skin through hydration. At the Dermlounge, our team offers professional-grade skin care products, such as the SkinMedica® HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator, to allow patients to work the anti-aging ingredient into their daily skin care regimen. For those wanting more significant improvement in their skin, dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® can be administered to help restore lost volume and smooth wrinkles in different facial areas. These injections can create a younger-looking facial appearance that lasts for several months.

What Happens if I Miss My Dermal Filler Appointment?

Patients often schedule follow-up appointments for their dermal fillers, allowing them to prolong the anti-aging effects of their injectable treatment. If you are not able to make it to Dermlounge for your repeat treatment, you may be wondering how your appearance will change as the formula wears off. This is an especially common concern for patients who have undergone filler injections for several years and worry they will look drastically different once it has completely metabolized and been processed out of their body.

Fillers typically fade very slowly, so you won’t wake up one morning and suddenly look like a significantly older version of yourself. How fast your filler wears off will depend on multiple factors, such as the type of product you received, the area that was treated, and the rate at which your body metabolizes the filler. Once your injections do wear off, you should look like you did prior to getting treatments. However, patients who have received fillers for many years may actually look younger than if they had never received injections in the first place. This is because the products work to improve the quality of your skin over time.

While our aesthetic professionals typically recommend patients schedule routine filler injections to maintain their rejuvenating results, patients can schedule an appointment after several months and effectively restore their smooth, youthful-looking skin. Between filler appointments, it can help to focus on your skin care regimen, such as by using medical-grade skin care lines offered at our medical spa. Through the regular use of these products, you can further improve the overall health and look of your skin.

How Can I Get Rid of My Frown Lines?

Frown lines, also known as 11s, are the vertical lines that develop between the eyebrows over time. They’re caused by overactive facial muscles that are used while making expressions, like furrowing your brow. Frown lines may be deeper or develop earlier for some people based on factors like genetics, sun exposure, stress, and smoking. Non-invasive skin treatments, such as chemical peels, can often help diminish the appearance of frown lines, but these solutions do not address what is causing the lines to develop.

One of the most effective ways to treat frown lines is with BOTOX® injections. As a neurotoxin, BOTOX Cosmetic relaxes the overactive muscles that are creating the frown lines. As these muscles relax, the lines are softened and become less obvious when the face is resting. Although BOTOX injections are a temporary solution, lasting about three to four months, with repeated treatments, the solution can help slow or prevent the development of frown lines in the future.

To learn if BOTOX Cosmetic is right for you, or if an alternative treatment is more appropriate for your aging concerns, please contact our team at the Dermlounge to schedule an appointment.

Am I a Candidate for KYBELLA™ Double Chin Reduction Treatment?

Our Dermlounge medispa, located at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery, strives to provide patients with non-surgical treatments that can offer natural-looking results. One of our popular cosmetic injectables, KYBELLA™, is specifically designed to target and reduce excess fat beneath the chin and/or jaw, while creating a more contoured appearance.

This type of treatment is best for patients who lead a healthy and active lifestyle, but who wish to eliminate the appearance of a double chin. If excess fat is causing a “bulging” appearance, KYBELLA™ could be a good treatment option. These FDA-approved injections can be beneficial in reducing submental fullness caused by aging, genetics, or weight gain. If our plastic surgeon determines that excess, inelastic skin along the chin or upper neck is what’s causing the concern, a surgical neck lift may be recommended.

A thorough consultation with our experienced staff, led by skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Neil J. Zemmel, can help determine if this treatment would be right for you. We will provide a physical exam of the potential treatment area and answer any questions you may have. KYBELLA™ has proven to be a remarkable treatment option for many patients who are looking for ways to reduce signs of a double chin and improve the appearance of their profile.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC Introduced as Dermal Filler for Nasolabial Folds

JUVÉDERM® continues to revolutionize the market for cosmetic injectables with the introduction of JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC, a new product specifically designed to target the smile lines that extend from the nose to the mouth. JUVÉDERM® has long released a number of innovative dermal fillers that use naturally occurring substances to combat the forces of time and age, but JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC acts as the only product that can achieve optimal results for nasolabial folds lasting up to a year and a half.

Like all products in the JUVÉDERM® dermal filler line, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC is composed of a hyaluronic acid-based gel. Hyaluronic acid is a substance produced naturally in the body to moisturize and soften skin. Combined with lidocaine, a mild anesthetic found in the gel to decrease discomfort at the injection site, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC firms and softens skin, yet remains supple enough to flow easily through the desired treatment area.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC gently and effectively improves the look of nasolabial folds, or “parentheses” wrinkles, by adding small amounts of volume to the treatment area for a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC’s ability to comprehensively treat moderate to severe wrinkles in the lower half of the face with a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure is prompting some patients to consider it as an alternative to a facelift. Benefits of using JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC can include:

  • Temporarily reverses signs of aging by smoothing nasolabial folds
  • Minimizes discomfort during the procedure due to the built-in anesthetic
  • Lasts up to eighteen months

Mild to moderate side effects may appear at the injection site and can include swelling, numbness, bruising, or discoloration. Within a week, these will typically subside.

How Can I Get Rid of a Double Chin Without Surgery?

kybella_injection_logo_rgbThe appearance of submental fullness (frequently called a “double chin”) is a common cosmetic concern that entails excess fat under the chin, which is often difficult to lose despite a healthy diet and exercise. Traditionally, liposuction has been the only effective method of eliminating accumulated fat beneath the chin and creating a more sculpted jawline. However, with the introduction of KYBELLA™, patients now have a non-surgical alternative that is quickly gaining popularity.

KYBELLA™ has many unique advantages compared to liposuction for reducing the appearance of a double chin. Since KYBELLA™ is an injectable used directly at the target site, there are no incisions and little to no associated recovery time. In addition, the entire KYBELLA™ treatment can be completed within 20 minutes, allowing patients to immediately return to their daily activities. Composed of deoxycholic acid, KYBELLA™ works to dissolve excess dietary fat, ultimately providing enhanced contours around the area of the upper neck and chin. Follow-up treatments may be scheduled to maximize the results of this innovative procedure. Once the desired number of treatments is complete, the final outcome with KYBELLA™ is considered to be long lasting.

KYBELLA™ is the only non-surgical procedure approved by the FDA to treat submental fullness (double chin). If you would like to learn more about KYBELLA™, or schedule a consultation at Dermlounge, please contact our office today.

What Makes JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC Different From Other Injectables?

woman smilingFor over a decade, injectables have been a popular choice for patients wanting to achieve – and maintain – firmer, smoother skin. Both neurotoxin-based injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® can be used to create a more youthful complexion. However, with the introduction of JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC, our patients at the Dermlounge can rejuvenate the midface like never before.

If you have experienced volume loss, wrinkles, or folds in the cheek area, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC can reverse these common signs of facial aging. The advanced formula of this dermal filler contains hyaluronic acid (HA), which can hydrate, nourish, and restore the skin of the midface for results that are long lasting. In addition, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is the only dermal filler specifically designed for the treatment of midfacial aging that has been approved by the FDA.

Although JUVÉDERM® also contains hyaluronic acid, it has a softer consistency that makes it better suited to areas of the face with thinner skin or for lip augmentation. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC, on the other hand, has a slightly thicker consistency and is designed for deeper hydration and volume restoration. To learn which injectable can best achieve your cosmetic goals, schedule a consultation with one of our skin experts at Dermlounge today.

What Are The Side Effects Of BOTOX Cosmetic Injections?

smile-lips-womanBOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most popular injectables at Dermlounge. Our patients have used BOTOX® injections to successfully achieve a more youthful complexion by blocking the involuntary contraction of facial muscles that can cause wrinkles. For most patients, this non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment is fast, effective, and often performed during a lunch hour or in-between errands.

Like most treatments, however, some patients may experience potential side effects with BOTOX® Cosmetic. The most common are mild and include:

  •      Redness
  •      Slight swelling
  •      Light bruising

Typically, these conditions resolve within a few hours of treatment and do not require any significant downtime.

In rare cases, BOTOX® Cosmetic may cause more severe side effects, and since this injectable is composed of a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, an allergic reaction is possible. If you experience symptoms such as inflammation, dizziness, hives, or shortness of breath after your injections, you should immediately seek emergency medical assistance. Even though allergic reactions to BOTOX® Cosmetic are uncommon, we recommend our patients discuss any known allergies or history of adverse reactions to medication with our Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Erin Stratton, NP before you begin treatment.

If you have additional questions about BOTOX® Cosmetic, or if you would like to schedule a consultation at Dermlounge, please contact us today.
