Scars can be unsightly, embarrassing, and a constant reminder of a past trauma. There are a number of treatment options available for to lessen the sight of a scar. These include steroid injections, dermabrasion, surgical excision, and laser treatments. In recent years laser therapy has become more advanced and more reliable, and in most patients can improve the appearance, texture, and color of a scar. At Richmond Aesthetic Surgery, we utilize a Pulse Dye Laser (PDL) for the improvement of both old and new scars. It is a great option for surgical and acne scars when more aggressive methods are not ideal. The laser targets the pigment found in red blood cells. The red blood cells and increased blood flow to a new scar results increased redness of that area. The obliterating the red cell component of the scar, the scar color will fade and the texture of the scar will soften with time. Over multiple treatments patients can expect an improvement of both the texture and color of the scar, and to blend better with the surrounding skin. Each treatment lasts approximately 15-45 minutes depending on the size of the scar. Many patients complain of a minor irritation similar to a rubber band snapping on the skin and topical numbing cream can applied to make you a comfortable as possible. After the treatment the scar will appear darker and bruised within minutes and will slowly fade over the next few days taking the hyperpigmentation along with it. The PDL causes minor injury to the scar to promote additional healing. Patients are instructed to keep the treated areas out of the sun but no other upkeep is required. Patients usually require 2 to 5 treatments spaced one month apart.
